NEW FIRE: Kolob Fire sparks in Washington County, evacuations underway

UPDATE — Utah Fire Info posted more information to say evacuations were underway for some residents in the area.

The evacuations were ordered for Kolob Terrace Road to SR-9, according to Utah Fire Info.

As of about 9 p.m. on Saturday, the Utah Wildfire Dashboard showed that the Kolob Fire had grown to about 300 acres.

ORIGINAL STORY

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Utah ( ABC4 ) — A new wildfire sparked in Washington County on Saturday, burning northeast of Virgin, Utah, according to Utah Fire Info.

The fire, which has been named the Kolob Fire, was first discovered just before 4:45 p.m., according to the Utah Wildfire Dashboard .

Utah Fire Info posted an update at 6 p.m. to say that the area of Kolob Terrace Road to SR-9 was under an evacuation order. Kolob Terrace Road was also closed, Utah Fire Info said.

People have been asked to avoid the area for the safety of the public and the safety of the firefighters.

Utah Fire Info said the Kolob Fire is threatening structures, and, as of the latest update, the Utah Wildfire Dashboard said seven acres were burned.

Air and ground resources have been called in to fight the fire. Officials did not initially release the cause, but later said that the fire was human-caused and was under investigation.
