It’s been a chaotic few weeks on the national political stage, with the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, the Republican National Convention and President Joe Biden withdrawing from the presidential election. Add to the mix Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s name swirling as a vice presidential candidate. Whew!

I’m here to remind you, in the midst of this national whirlwind, about Michigan’s August primary. Early voting started on Saturday. Election Day is Aug. 6.

There are no presidential candidates on this ballot. (Michigan’s presidential primary was Feb. 27.) But there are races to narrow the field for the state’s open U.S. Senate seat, U.S. House seats, positions in the state Legislature and local representatives in myriad municipalities. There are also a combined 24 ballot proposals in Ingham, Eaton and Clinton counties.

You can find the LSJ’s voting guide here . And here is an explainer on how to vote in a Michigan primary.
