BISMARCK, N.D. ( KXNET) — Last week, the Stark County Sheriff’s Office received two reports of phone call scams.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the scammers are claiming to be a Deputy or Sergeant Wendell from their office. In the call, the scammer says there is a warrant out for your arrest for missing jury duty and that there is a $10,000 bond that needs to be paid over the phone.

Authorities say over the years, scammer tactics have gotten increasingly complex and that the scams in Stark County are no exception, with the Sheriff’s Office noting that the scammers managed to clone their office phone number, so it shows up on caller ID.

The scammers also concocted a fake warrant and texted it to one victim.

The Sheriff’s Office thereby warns the public that they will never ask you for money over the phone, through the mail, or via electronic means.

Warrants are also not conducted over the phone, and official paper work is never sent to the person via text.

Instead, a legitimate warrant and money owed to the court will be served in person.

If you believe you’ve fallen victim to a scam or if you have a question about scams circulating in your community, call your local law enforcement immediately or stop by the office and speak to a deputy in person.
