Both teams enter this match coming off a 3-0 win. The U.S. attack, which had looked out-of-sync and sputtering in pre-Olympics friendlies, suddenly looked full of pace, verticality, and verve, leading to a pair of Mallory Swanson goals and a goal for Trinity Rodman on her Olympic debut.

Germany meanwhile dominated Australia on set pieces, scoring a pair of goals off of corner kicks, with Jule Brand scoring a tap-in midway through the second half on a counter-attack to complete the rout.

One major storyline to follow is whether Sophia Smith will play. She left the USWNT's opener late in the first half with an injury. Jaedyn Shaw also missed the match due to an injury and it remains to be seen what her status will be heading into the weekend match.

U.S. coach Emma Hayes faces additional fitness concerns as her team prepares to face Germany. There's open questions about whether Sophia Smith or Jaedyn Shaw will play, and Rose Lavelle was taken off at halftime. It was likely a tactical move, but it's something to keep an eye on. The U.S. doesn't really have a replacement for Lavelle as a midfield creator alongside Lindsey Horan, so they'll need to make sure Lavelle has enough in the tank to play on Sunday.
