BISMARCK, N.D. ( KXNET) — At Lake Sakakawea State Park, one deputy’s memory is taking roots in the community.

Deputy Paul Martin was an 18-year veteran of the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office. However, he was tragically killed in the line of duty on December 6, 2024.

Martin received the report of a stolen SUV being driven by Ian Cramer, the son of Senator Kevin Cramer. Highway Patrol located the vehicle near Hazen, but Cramer drove off. As Martin pursued Cramer, Cramer crashed the patrol vehicle head-on, and Martin died from the impact of the crash.

Yesterday, a heartfelt tree-planting ceremony was held at Lake Sakakawea State Park, paying tribute to Martin’s service as well as his passion for the outdoors.

Like Martin’s legacy, the tree will continue to grow and offer comfort through its presence and shade.

Lake Sakakawea State Park said in a statement, “He [Martin] will be remembered not just as a hero but as someone who spread love, courage, and a sense of home through his service. We are honored to help celebrate his life and remember the incredible impact he had on his community.”

Martin was not only beloved by his team; he was also a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather.
