As the 2024 Paris Olympics gets underway following Friday's memorable opening ceremony, many fans have become perplexed by the obscure mascot for the global event.

The mascots are named " The Phryges " (pronounced frij-ee- uh) , which are based on a hat-like piece of clothing symbolic of freedom and has been a part of French history dating back centuries, according to the Olympics.

A symbol of revolution, the French Republic and freedom, the Phrygian cap can be seen throughout French artwork, stationary, and the nation's curriculum. The most notable depiction being on French national icon, Marianne.

The Phryges have been a part of major events throughout France's illustrious history. French National Archives show records of the caps being worn during the construction of Paris’ Notre-Dame cathedral in 1163, during the Revolution of 1789, during work to build the Eiffel Tower, and during the Paris 1924 Olympic Games.

There will be two different Phryges mascots: one for both the 2024 Paris Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. The Paralympic version differs through a prosthetic leg, a closed mouth and its two eye lashes are positioned on the other side of its face.

The Phryges will continue to make appearances throughout the Paris Olympics as fans watch some of the world's top athletes compete on the global stage.
