Team USA has typically relied on younger gymnasts to carry it to glory at the Olympics .

From 18-year-old Kerri Strug's iconic vault through a leg injury at the 1996 Atlanta Games to 15-year-old Kyla Ross' strong balance beam and uneven bars scores for the "Fierce Five" at the 2012 London Games, teenagers have made frequently helped the U.S. women's gymnastics team earn gold medals at the Summer Games.

That is not as likely to happen at the 2024 Paris Games, however.

While 16-year-old Hezly Rivera is on Team USA for the 2024 Olympics, the other four members of the squad are all at least 21 years old. That includes Simone Biles, who will serve as the group's elder stateswoman and look to carry the team to gold in the team competition.

Even with Rivera in tow, the U.S. roster's average age of 22.2 is the fourth-oldest in team history. All the teams with average ages higher than that mark came in 1952 or earlier, so Team USA is in unfamiliar territory for the 2024 Olympics.

That experience could prove to be a good thing, especially if Biles & Co. bring their A-game to Paris. But just how old is Biles? Here's what to know about the three-time Olympian's age and how she compares to the other oldest women's Olympic gymnasts in Team USA history.

    How old is Simone Biles?

Simone Biles is 27 years old and is participating in her third Olympics. Her first came in 2016, when she was 19 years old. She won four gold medals at those Games, one with the team and three individually in the all-around, vault and floor exercises.

When Biles takes the floor in Paris, she will become the oldest women's gymnast to take the floor for Team USA since the 1952 Olympics. Even so, she's still a ways away from being the oldest ever.

Oldest gymnasts in Team USA history

Biles will be the seventh-oldest women's gymnast in Team USA's Olympic history once competition begins at the 2024 Paris Games.

That said, Biles is still eight years younger than Marie Hoesly, who was 35 when she competed in the 1952 Helsinki Games. Hoesly remains the oldest American women's gymnast in Olympic history by a wide margin, as just 14 gymnasts aged 25 or older have ever competed for the U.S. women's gymnastics team at the Olympics:

    Gymnast Year Age
    Marie Hoesly 1952 35
    Adelaide Meyer 1936 30
    Dorothy Dalton 1952 30
    Mary Wright 1936 28
    Meta Elste-Neumann 1952 28
    Marian Barone 1952 28
    Irma Haubold 1936 27
    Simone Biles 2024 27
    Dorothy Dalton 1948 26
    Annia Hatch 2004 26
    Ada Lunardoni 1936 25
    Ruth Topalian 1952 25
    Linda Metheny 1972 25
    Mohini Bhardwaj 2004 25

Biles could become the second-oldest women's gymnast in Team USA's history should she return and participate in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. That honor could also belong to Gabby Douglas, who is 28 and is aiming for a comeback in LA after falling short in her efforts for Paris because of injury.

At least for the Paris Games, though, the number of American women aged 30 or older to compete in Olympic gymnastics will remain at three.
