Octogenarian seeking help with rent, food, assisted by Cape Cod Times Neighbors Fund

An octogenarian called the Neighbors Fund seeking assistance paying rent. For the past 60 years she has held many interesting and rewarding jobs. However, as she got into her 80s, she started slowing down and has not been able to work as much. She explained that rent, food, utilities — all the basic needs — have increased while her income hasn’t. She lives in a small apartment and is on a senior housing list and is hopeful she will be able to move into a more affordable unit.

But, until then, she needed a helping hand. The Neighbors Fund was able to assist her with rent and provided her with a Stop & Shop food voucher to refill her cabinets. In addition, the Neighbors Fund provided her with resources that would help ease her monthly expenses, such as SNAP benefits to help with food and age-protection programs to help with her utilities.

    What is the Neighbors Fund?

The nonprofit Cape Cod Times Neighbors Fund , formerly the Needy Fund, has provided emergency financial assistance to thousands of Cape Codders and Islanders since 1936. That assistance is made possible because of the continued generosity of neighbors helping neighbors.

The Neighbors Fund provides short-term emergency assistance to Cape and Islands residents so they can continue to go to work and/or stay in their homes. People in need submit their requests for help to the Neighbors Fund, which in turn pays for the goods or services — a medical bill, for example — through a voucher system. No cash is given to Neighbors Fund recipients.

How to donate to the Neighbors Fund
