Trinity Rodman was forced into talking about a sore subject after helping the United States women's national team defeat Zambia at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

Rodman's hot form in front of goal has continued since making the trip to Europe, having been one of the three goal-scorers in the 3-0 win. The Washington Spirit star opened the scoring in the Olympic group game before a brace from Mallory Swanson secured a comfortable win.

In the aftermath, both Rodman and Swanson were invited on the Today Show, and it was here where the former was presented with an awkward question about her personal life.

The USWNT striker is of course the daughter of NBA legend Dennis Rodman, but the pair do not share much of a relationship. Appearing on the show this week, the Olympian was asked: "Did your dad call and give you an ‘attagirl’ after that one?”

Giving a calming response, Rodman replied: "Nope, but my mom was there. She gave me a big ol’ hug.” The soccer star has been open about her lacking father-daughter relationship in the past, opening up on her family life in a personal post on social media back in 2021.

“My dad doesn’t play a big role in my life at all and most people don’t know that, we don’t see eye to eye on many things,” Rodman said. I go months if not years without his presence or communication. Being in spotlights has been hard for us, him and me. We don’t have the best relationship, but at the end of the day he’s human I’m human… He’s my dad, and I’m his little girl that will never change.”

Team USA will return to Olympic action on Sunday, facing a tough test against Germany in their second group game. The Germans also kicked off their tournament with a 3-0 victory, overcoming Australia in game one.

Looking ahead, Rodman said: "We’re more than what everybody thinks. We’re not just an athletic team with fast forwards. We’re so much more than that. We need to believe deep down that we can break down teams. If that’s passing it up and laying it off and moving off of each other, there’s so much more depth that we can bring.

"And I think living and breathing that on the field is going to help us improve." Opening up on the new camp under Emma Hayes too, she added: "We’re all really starting to come around to the way Emma has wanted us to play, the principles. It’s been really enjoyable, just being able to learn different things and trying to apply them... The group that we have is super special."
