Liverpool star doubles down on blunt transfer verdict after Arne Slot talks

Liverpool star Sepp van den Berg has admitted he reckons the $25m (£20m/€22m) price tag the Reds have placed on him is "quite a lot."

The Dutch defender joined Liverpool back in 2019 from PEC Zwolle, and has made four loan moves away from Anfield during that time. He spent a season and a half with Preston North End, making 66 appearances in all competitions for the Championship side.

He made nine appearances for Schalke during the 2022/23 season, before spending last term on loan with Mainz in the Bundesliga. Liverpool is well stocked at the back, with Arne Slot's squad boasting four quality center-backs in Virgil van Dijk , Ibrahima Konate , Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah .

And that quality could see Van den Berg shipped out once again this summer, and this time he could be eyeing up a permanent move. The 22-year-old hit out at Liverpool earlier in the summer , insisting the club was preventing him from leaving by placing too high a price on his head, although he does seem to have softened his stance somewhat now .

And with three of Liverpool's first-choice defenders - Van Dijk, Konate and Gomez - all on leave after Euro 2024, it has given the Dutchman the perfect opportunity to impress Slot during pre-season. However, Van den Berg knows that might not be enough to force his way into Liverpool's plans, and maintains the price tag the Reds have placed upon him might prevent him from leaving this summer.

"If you want to leave, then £20m is quite a lot," Van den Berg told reporters during the Reds' US pre-season tour.

"I know in today’s market crazy things can happen. They put a price tag on me which Liverpool may think is right because I had a good season last year. The first reaction from me was that it was quite high!

"Of course, it is a compliment in one way. It’s a sign of how well I did last year. But it makes it a bit more difficult the other way. If they only thought I was worth £2m, that wouldn’t be nice… But £20m is maybe on the high side."

But in the event he does stay at Liverpool, the Dutchman is doing everything he can to show Slot he can be a valuable asset to the Reds squad for the coming season.

He added: "I spoke with Arne [Slot] on the first day and he said I have to show myself in pre-season. Of course, I have my own visions about things. I like to play.

"I am here to show the new manager that I am Liverpool-worthy. If he gives me a chance and likes me, there’s a big chance of me staying. But we are still early in the window so we will see what happens."
