Dexter Spinoff’s Molly Brown Teases Surprises for Fans in Original Sin Prequel: ‘You Might Know Dexter’s Backstory, But…’

Dexter ‘s titular character was a serial killer who went undetected for years, so it makes sense that a prequel about his teen years will contain secrets of its own — even for diehard fans of the original series.

TVLine’s Keisha Hatchett caught up with Molly Brown, who plays a young Deb in the upcoming Dexter: Original Sin , at San Diego Comic-Con Saturday, to get the lowdown on the new series. “The scripts are so good,” Brown teases in the video above. “There’s some really, really good stuff at the end of the season.”

The forthcoming Paramount+ with Showtime drama, set in the 1990s, centers on a younger version of the serial-killer character played by Michael C. Hall in the original series. (Hall will narrate the show, as well as star in another spinoff, Dexter: Resurrection .) Per Original Sin ‘s official description, young Dexter is unable to control his “bloodthirsty urges” and must learn to “channel his inner darkness.” (See the first photos from Original Sin here .)

Patrick Gibson ( Shadow and Bone ) will play Dexter, with Brown ( Billions ) as his sister Deb and Christian Slater ( Mr. Robot ) as his adoptive father, Harry. The cast also includes Sarah Michelle Gellar ( Buffy the Vampire Slayer ), Patrick Dempsey ( Grey’s Anatomy ), James Martinez ( Love, Victor ), Christina Milian ( Grandfathered ), Alex Shimizu ( The Blacklist ) and Reno Wilson ( Good Girls ).

And even those who’ve memorized every splatter pattern from the original Dexter will enjoy the revelations in the spinoff, Brown promises.

“I know you think you might know Dexter’s backstory,” she says, “but there’s a lot of really cool stuff coming, especially in the second half.”
