Seven people were killed in DR Congo capital Kinshasa when a stampede formed at a music concert inside the country’s national stadium.

Hundreds more were injured in the incident on Saturday where Mike Kalambayi, a popular gospel singer, was performing to around 30,000 at the Martyrs' Stadium.

State television RTNC reported the deaths and said that the injured were taken to intensive care at a local hospital.

Kinshasa police have now started an investigation into what caused the stampede.

The 80,000 seater stadium was about half full for the concert.

French speaking singer Kalambaya had written on his Instagram page in the build up: “It's not just a concert, but the long-awaited moment where we will come together to celebrate, worship, praise, and dance for the glory of our one and only Saviour Jesus Christ.”

He has not updated his social media pages since the incident.

Videos from the scene show large crowds gathered outside in front of barricades.

The Martyrs' Stadium also played host to a crush during another music concert last October, during which 11 people died.

It is also the home ground for the country’s national football team.
