Downtown South Bend Welcomes New YMCA Fitness Center with Grand Opening Celebration

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The vibrant heart of South Bend is beating even stronger with the grand reopening of the YMCA fitness center at 111 W. Jefferson Boulevard. On Thursday, the YMCA officially cut the ribbon on its latest downtown facility, marking a new chapter in its long-standing community presence.

In April, the city sanctioned the transfer of the former Beacon Health & Fitness at the Memorial Leighton Healthplex to the YMCA. The transformation from a healthplex to a full-service YMCA facility became a reality with a spirited ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by over 150 people, including South Bend Mayor James Muller and Mark Weber, CEO of the YMCA of Greater Michiana.

The newly opened gym, located just a block from where the YMCA's journey began in 1907, offers a comprehensive array of amenities. Members can enjoy group exercise classes, a lap pool, a therapy pool and whirlpool, as well as extensive cardio and strength equipment. This facility promises to be a hub of health and wellness in the city’s core.

The YMCA’s move into the downtown area is only the beginning. The next phase includes minor repairs and enhancements to further enrich the member experience. One exciting prospect is the development of an on-site daycare center, which would provide a convenient option for working families in the area. “We’re looking into creating a daycare center within the building,” Weber shared. “This would allow parents to drop off their children close to work and perhaps enjoy lunch together.”
