Simone Biles injury fears after Team USA star made Olympics history

Simone Biles made a stunning return to Olympic action in Paris on Sunday, but there are concerns over her fitness after suffering a calf injury during the gymnastics qualifying event at Bercy Arena.

Biles finished atop the all-around standings after sensational performances across the vault, beam, floor and uneven bars as she vies to add to her haul of seven Olympic medals. But her opening day of the games was not without its drama.

The 27-year-old appeared to suffer an injury to her left leg during her warm-up and she was seen with heavy strapping around her calf and ankle when the competition began. It did not seem to have much impact on her performance, but Biles was seen limping as she left the arena.

The U.S. superstar is due to be in action in the team final on Tuesday, with the individual all-around final following on Thursday. Biles has a history of calf injuries and she was overheard on the broadcast saying: "As soon as I took off, I felt it. It's right there on my calf. Right where I had that f------ tear."

Biles' coach Cecile Landi told reporters at Bercy Arena that the seven-time Olympic medalist had exacerbated a previous calf issue. She said Biles "never" contemplated withdrawing from the competition and added: "She felt a little something in her calf. That’s all. There was just a little pain in her calf. She felt it a little on the floor and we taped it.

"A couple of weeks ago she felt it and after it stopped and she felt a little again today. She felt better at the end of the competition today. On [the] bars, she said she felt better." Landi declined to provide details of Biles' prognosis and added: "I don’t know. I’m not a doctor."

Biles was making her first Olympic appearance since withdrawing from several events in Tokyo three years ago. She suffered from the "twisties", a sensation that causes gymnasts to lose coordination in the air, during the tournament and suffered a loss of confidence. After the games, she stepped away from competition for two years to focus on her mental health.

But Biles returned in style last year and earned her way onto the U.S. Olympic squad. And on the biggest stage, she showed her class on Sunday, becoming the first woman to land a triple flip in competition.

Her performance on the floor was also glittering, with numerous highly complex elements executed to near perfection as she received a score of 14.6.
