Getting a dog is a big responsibility. While they are undoubtedly worthwhile and add much joy to our lives, bringing home a new family member also means giving some things up. Long gone are the days of after-work dinners or happy hours unless your furry companion can join in, too!

That’s why many animal lovers put off getting a pet. But sometimes, life shows us what we need when we least expect it. Watch this July 15 video to see how a puppy unexpectedly changed one man’s world.

As we age, we quickly learn that life reveals what we are meant for, and it’s often quite different from what we may have planned. Mike recently experienced this when volunteering for a puppy event at work. Although he may not have intended to become a dog dad, this little cutie won his heart. After meeting Cactus @ cactustherescue , the connection was undeniable, and the rescue organization informed him that he could foster the puppy for a few weeks. He then prepared to take him home and picked him up. After only a week together, someone else expressed interest in adopting Cactus, and that’s when this dad knew he couldn’t let him go. Who could say goodbye to those precious ears? He reveals that keeping him “Was the best decision I ever made.” It’s funny how the things we never planned on are often the most beautiful opportunities of our lives.

Ways to Prepare for a New Puppy

    1. Purchase supplies like leashes, harnesses, crates, bowls, food, bedding, toys, and healthy treats.

    2. Puppy-proof your home. Unless you want things like your favorite childhood stuffed animal ripped to shreds, it’s best to keep these items out of reach. It’s also essential to remove small and easy-to-eat items they shouldn’t ingest, as well as any potentially poisonous houseplants .

    3. Establish a veterinarian and find a dog trainer . Even if you’re bringing home a healthy dog, having a veterinarian familiar with your pet is essential. A trainer can help develop critical skills early on and provide your dog with socialization opportunities like puppy playtime to foster healthy relationships and create positive experiences.

This sweet story touched people. Viewer @emily_farace_ responded, “The happiness and wholesome vibe is making my heart burst.” It’s a beautiful tale! Viewer @zboytroy remarked, “It happens, and when it does, it’s the best thing ever!” It sure is. Another person pointed out, “Meant to be. Training is hard, but you will end up with a best friend.” They are always worth the work we put in.

If you're still deciding whether to commit to a new dog, fostering can be an excellent opportunity to care for a puppy or older dog. Even if you don't keep them, you can give them the love and security they need to thrive, setting them up for success when they meet their forever family.
