(WKBN) — It’s that time of year once again — back-to-school shopping.

This year, things are slightly less expensive.

So, what are the shopping trends experts are following, and how can you ease the financial burden?

If you haven’t started back-to-school shopping yet, now is the time to get it done.

It can cost families hundreds of dollars each year to make sure their kids are prepared to start the school year.

Shopping experts say it’s best to shop sales and limit purchases to save money.

According to The National Retail Federation , the average family will spend about $875 on back-to-school items ahead of this school year.

That’s a lot, but prices are trending down compared to last year. The organization says Americans spent a whopping $41.5 billion in 2023.

This year the organization expects families to save some money with total back-to-school spending reaching $38.8 billion, so how are families making these purchases?

The items that are costing families the most include electronics and clothing.

One NerdWallet Survey showed most will do their best to not go into debt. Some taking advantage of “buy now, pay later” services.

To save money, experts say creating a list and shopping early can help.

The Better Business Bureau says if you can, team up and buy in bulk for items like hand sanitizer or tissues.

With Ohio’s tax-free shopping week starting Tuesday, some stores may have deals running locally.

Experts say while preparing to shop to compare prices between stores to see where you can get the best deals. It could mean shopping at different locations.
