A pontoon boat capsized on the Arizona-Utah border, killing two 4-year-old boys and a 72-year-old woman, sheriff’s officials reported.

The National Park Service received a report of an overturned vessel on Lake Powell in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area at 3:18 p.m. Friday, July 26, the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

A pontoon boat being towed by another boat capsized in Navajo Canyon with 11 people onboard, deputies said. Some boaters were trapped beneath the overturned boat.

Deputies said waves contributed to the accident.

Rangers, firefighters and nearby boaters rescued the passengers, deputies said.

Two 4-year-old boys and Melissa Bean, 72, died in the accident, deputies said.

The 186-mile long Lake Powell lies on the Colorado River, VisitPageAz.com said.

Navajo Canyon is about a 280-mile drive north from Phoenix.
