Just over a year after the death of Sinead O’Connor, the singer’s official cause of death has been revealed.

O’Connor, who died July 26, 2023 in London, died from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma, according to a death certificate filed Wednesday by the singer’s family, the Irish Independent reports .

The death certificate specifically cites an “exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchial asthma together with low grade lower respiratory tract infection” for O’Connor’s death.

The singer was found “unresponsive” at her London home last July, and her death was initially ruled not suspicious and from “ natural causes .” However, the exact cause of death wasn’t revealed until Wednesday, when her former husband John Reynolds filed the death certificate, which was signed off by a London coroner.

About a month after her death and several days after her funeral, O’Connor’s family issued a follow-up statement thanking everyone from fans to members of the press for their support and for respecting the family’s wishes for privacy.

“Our thanks to the media personnel in general at home and abroad who celebrated Sinéad in song and story while showing respect for the privacy requested by the family. We ask that this privacy continue to be respected.”

The statement continued, “Finally, we wish to thank Sinéad’s fans and admirers for the wonderful funeral procession they gave her past her old home in Bray and for the national and international outpouring of love and affection for Sinéad from the time of her passing. The prayers and thanks of the extended O’Connor family are with you all.”
