Paris Olympics organizers apologize for ‘shocking’ drag ‘Last Supper’ tableau

Paris Olympic organizers apologized for a controversial opening ceremony scene that parodied “The Last Supper” with drag queens and angered Christians around the globe because of how “extremely disrespectful” it was.
The unsavory satire instantly earned intense criticism for its take on the Biblical story — enshrined in a timeless Leonardo da Vinci fresco painting and marking the moment that Jesus Christ told the 12 apostles one of them would eventually betray him.

Still, Olympic organizers defended the intent behind the parody that featured DJ and producer Barbara Butch, who is a well-known LBGTQ figure, and other drag queens and dancers that was put together by the ceremony’s artistic director Thomas Jolly.
“Clearly there was never an intention to show disrespect to any religious group. On the contrary, I think (with) Thomas Jolly, we really did try to celebrate community tolerance,” spokesperson Anne Descamps said during a press conference on Sunday.
“Looking at the result of the polls that we shared, we believe that this ambition was achieved. If people have taken any offense we are, of course, really, really sorry.”
The incredible opening ceremony, which took place Friday on the Seine River in France, drew millions of viewers across the globe, but was marred by the controversy.
The French Catholic Church’s conference of bishops was one of many to slam the scene.

“This ceremony has unfortunately included scenes of derision and mockery of Christianity, which we very deeply deplore,” the Conference of French bishops said in a statement.
Politicians in the US and other parts of the world also expressed disgust.
“Last night’s mockery of the Last Supper was shocking and insulting to Christian people around the world who watched the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games,” US Speaker Mike Johnson said in a social media post.
“The war on our faith and traditional values knows no bounds today. But we know that truth and virtue will always prevail. ‘The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.’ (John 1:5).”
Billionaire and Tesla head Elon Musk said it was “extremely disrespectful to Christians.”
One tech company, Mississippi-based telecommunications company C Spire, said it was pulling Olympic advertising after the opening show sparked outrage.
“We were shocked by the mockery of the Last Supper during the opening ceremonies of the Paris Olympics. C Spire will be pulling our advertising from the Olympics,” the company posted on X
Jolly, the artistic director, tried to distance his scene from the parallels of the “The Last Supper,” insisting it was meant to cheer on diversity and pay tribute to feasting and French gastronomy.
“My wish isn’t to be subversive, nor to mock or to shock,” Jolly said. “Most of all, I wanted to send a message of love, a message of inclusion and not at all to divide.”
