A 28-year-old man remains in custody after fleeing from law enforcement during a traffic stop on July 19. The suspect struck a light pole while fleeing and then attempted to escape on foot, but was quickly apprehended.

According to a preliminary report from the Coffee County Drug Unit, detectives were patrolling the Oak Park Community when they observed a black Ford Fusion traveling south on Mahogany Road. The vehicle failed to maintain its lane, crossing the white line and even driving on the grass.

A traffic stop was initiated at 1766 Highway 221 North. As detectives approached and began identifying the occupants, they detected the smell of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. When asked to exit the vehicle for a search, the driver, later identified as Antwone Carnegie of Cordele, rolled up his window and fled the scene.

Carnegie drove south on Highway 221 North, turned onto East Walker Street, and struck a light pole at the intersection of East Walker Street and North Coweta Avenue. After the crash, he exited the vehicle and attempted to run on foot, dropping a handgun in the process.

Carnegie was apprehended shortly afterward and transported to Coffee Regional Medical Center at his request. After being medically cleared, he was booked into the Coffee County Jail on charges including fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of a felony, and possession of marijuana. Detectives also noted that Carnegie had outstanding warrants in Crisp County.

As of Sunday, July 28, Carnegie remains in custody at the Coffee County Jail.
