Exact cause of Sinéad O’Connor’s death revealed one year after her passing

The exact cause of death for musician Sinéad O’Connor has been revealed one year after she passed away in London .

According to multiple reports , the death certificate for the musician, which was registered by her ex-husband John Reynolds in London, listed that her passing was caused by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma.

The “Nothing Compares 2 U” singer was also suffering from a respiratory tract infection, which contributed to her death.

In January, a spokesman for Southwark Coroner’s Court in London announced that O’Connor had died “of natural causes” and that the coroner had “therefore ceased their involvement in her death.”

The Irish singer died on July 26, 2023. She was 56.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad,” her family said in a statement to RTÉ at the time.

“Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”

Police revealed O’Connor had been found “unresponsive” at an apartment in London and was “pronounced dead at the scene.”

In June 2022, the provocative musician canceled all her music gigs to take care of “her own health” after her son Shane died by suicide at age 17.

“We would like to respectfully announce that due to continuing grief over the tragic loss of her beloved son Shane earlier this year, Sinead O’Connor will not be performing live in 2022,” O’Connor’s management team wrote at the time.

“Thank you to Sinead’s friends and fans whose support and understanding we hold in the highest esteem throughout this period. The love being shown has been a source of great comfort and peace for Sinead.”

The “Drink Before the War” singer took to Instagram to pay tribute to her son, writing that the “very light of my life, decided to end his earthly struggle today and is now with God.”

She also wrote that she hopes her “baby” is “at peace.”

O’Connor experienced mental health struggles over the years — even cryptically posting about overdosing in 2015.

The following year, she was reported missing .

However, in June 2016, O’Connor denied “false and malicious gossip” reports that she had attempted suicide, writing that she was “far too too f–king happy” for that.

O’Connor is survived by her other three children: Jake, 37, Roisin, 28, and Yeshua, 17.
