USA's Huske, Walsh Take Gold, Silver In Olympics Women's 100M Butterfly

American swimmers Torri Huske and Gretchen Walsh finished first and second, respectively, in the women's 100-meter butterfly final at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Sunday (July 28).

Huske, 21, was timed at 55.59 seconds, edging Walsh's score by 0.04. China's Zhang Yufei finished with a time of 56.21 to claim bronze.

Huske, whose taking a gap year from Stanford, previously finished fourth in the 100-meter butterfly and claimed silver in the women's 4x100-meter medley relay at the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Games in 2021. Walsh, 21, who swims collegiately for the University of Virginia, broke the 100-meter world record during the U.S. Olympic trials in Indianapolis last month after failing to make the Olympic team for the Tokyo Games.

The women's 100-meter butterfly took place after French swimmer Léon Marchand set a new Olympic record, winning gold in the men's 400-meter individual medley minutes prior. Marchand, 22, was clocked at 4:02.95, breaking the record previously set by American Michael Phelps , the most decorated swimmer in history, at the 2008 Beijing Games, to win his first Olympic gold medal of his career.

The French swimmer had previously broken Phelps' Olympic record, which stood as the official world record for nearly 15 years, at the 2023 World Championships. Marchand won decisively, pulling away from the field during the second 100-meter split, the backstroke, with Japan's Tomoyuki Matsushita finishing at 4:08.62 for silver and USA's Carson Foster timing at 4:08.66 for bronze.
