Olympic Swimming recap: France's hometown hero steals spotlight, American upsets American on Day 2

Sunday's swimming action delivered more drama and incredible finishes.

France's Leon Marchand stole the spotlight early, winning gold in the men's 400 individual medley in dominating fashion and breaking the Olympic record with a time of 4:02.95.

Marchand was an NCAA champion under legendary coach Bob Bowman at Arizona State . Team USA's Carson Foster earned bronze in the event for his first-ever Olympic medal.

Team USA's Torri Huske and Gretchen Walsh finished first and second, respectively, in the women's 100 butterfly. Walsh, an NCAA champion at the University of Virginia, broke the Olympic record in her semifinal race and was the top seed, but Huske's incredible closing speed in the final lap was enough to edge Walsh for the gold medal.

It's the first time since 1984 that American women won gold and silver in this event.

The men's 100 breaststroke final provided late drama as Great Britain's Adam Peaty and Team USA's Nic Fink tied for the silver medal. Peaty fell just short of becoming the first male swimmer since Michael Phelps to win gold in a single event at three straight Games.

Italy's Nicolo Martinenghi out-touched Fink and Peaty by two hundredths of a second to earn the gold medal.

China's Qin Haiyang, one of the swimmers still embroiled in the 2021 doping scandal , finished seventh in the final despite being favored to make the podium.

Ryan Murphy, the so-called "Backstroke King," barely qualified for the men's 100 backstroke final and will have the opportunity to take the first step in making Olympic history . If Murphy earns a medal in Monday's final and then again in the 200 backstroke, he would become the first male swimmer to win medals in both events at three consecutive Olympics.

American Luke Hobson won his semifinal heat in the men's 200 freestyle, qualifying for Monday's final. And Lilly King will represent Team USA in the women's 100 breaststroke final after posting the third-best time in the semifinals.

Claire Weinstein will take on Australia's Ariarne Titmus and Mollie O'Callaghan in the women's 200 freestyle final on Monday, further advancing the U.S.-Aussie rivalry in full tilt at these Games.
