( WJW ) – After a nationwide recall on a variety of canned coffee products , the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has determined the recall on items distributed through different coffee roasters and retailers to be a “Class II.”

According to the FDA, Snapchill LLC, a Wisconsin-based company, voluntarily recalled the list of coffee products in June after learning the company’s manufacturing process could lead to a potentially fatal form of food poisoning, botulism.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, botulism is a rare but serious illness that can cause difficulty breathing, muscle paralysis, and even death. The FDA states symptoms can begin from six hours to two weeks after eating food that contains the toxin.

On July 23, the FDA determined the “ ongoing ” recall to be a “Class II” meaning it’s “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”

The ‘ Class II Recall ‘ status falls between the most concerning, Class I, which would indicate a risk of “serious adverse health consequences or death” and the least concerning, Class III.

According to the original recall alert , the manufacturing process of the items “could lead to the growth and production of the deadly toxin, botulinum toxin, in low acid canned foods.”

The Class II Recall applies to 20 different coffee and tea products, that make up more than 10 million cans, according to the update posted to the FDA website . That list can be found, here .

The recalled products were sold nationwide under a range of roaster and brand names and in variety of metal can sizes ranging from 7 oz to 12 oz., according the FDA. A complete list of the recalled products can be found, here .

Impacted products should either be destroyed or returned to Snapchill or the place of purchase for a refund, reports the FDA.
