TV network Eurosport has confirmed that it removed commentator Bob Ballard from its Paris Olympics coverage after an "inappropriate" comment during the games.

Ballard caused controversy during Eurosport's coverage of the women's 4x100 relay on Saturday. The incident occurred after the Australian team - made up of Mollie O’Callaghan, Shayna Jack, Emma McKeon and Meg Harris - secured gold for their country. The stars made their way out of the Paris Aquatic Centre when experienced commentator Ballard made a controversial remark.

“Well, the women [are] just finishing up. You know what women are like… hanging around, doing their make-up," Ballard was heard saying during coverage of the women's swimming. The footage spread on social media, and Eurosport has since issued a statement.

“During a segment of Eurosport’s coverage last night, commentator Bob Ballard made an inappropriate comment," it read. “To that end, he has been removed from our commentary roster with immediate effect.”

Ballard had been on commentary duty with Lizzie Simmonds. His co-commentator was heard calling his words "outrageous," while some fans on social media had stronger things to say.

"Bob Ballard hang your head in shame and get off the broadcast and back to the 1930s," one wrote. Another called his comments "shameful," writing: "When will these people ever learn? Why aren’t they being given some training?"

"Eurosport please sack Bob Ballard from commentating any more at the Olympics 2024," was the response from another. "His comments re Aus 4x100 female swim relay team totally disgusting in today's world. He needs to publicly apologise!!!"

Australia's women's team claimed gold by more than a second in their event. The United States team claimed the silver medal, with China taking bronze.

Australia's win saw McKeon surpass Olympic legend Ian Thorpe's tally of five gold medals at the games. "Wow. I don't keep track of that kind of stuff ... it's an honor really," she told Nine after the win.

"To be part of this [4x100m relay team], it's extremely hard and this is a team of six with Bronte (Campbell) and Liv (Olivia Wunsch, heat swimmers) - we couldn't do it without this group of six. Everyone wants to be part of this team. I feel really honoured to be part of it.

"It's definitely been a rough couple of years, especially this year. I definitely had my doubts. I just really wanted to be part of this team tonight."
