The Women's 100m Butterfly Final served as the highlight of the day for Team USA's Olympic swim team on Sunday, as Torri Huske earned gold by beating out fellow American Gretchen Walsh by a scant 0.04 seconds. Huske, who had missed out on medaling at the Tokyo Olympics, chased down Walsh in the final 25 meters to earn a narrow victory that marked the United States' first individual gold medal of the Paris games.

In the process, Huske and Walsh became the first American women to earn a 1-2 finish in the women's 100m butterfly in a full 40 years. The last time that occurred was in the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984, when Mary T. Meagher and Jenna Johnson finished first and second.

The podium was rounded out by China's Zhang Yufei, who earned bronze.

The women's meet took center stage for Team USA, as the American men would take a backseat to a banner day for European swimmers. Carson Foster would earn bronze in the Men's 400m Individual Medley Final, an event that saw France's Leon Marchand set a new Olympic record at a 4:02.95, earning gold and beating both Foster and second-place Tomoyuki Matsushita of Japan.

The Men's 100m Breaststroke Final saw Nic Fink earn silver in a close finish that saw Italy's Nicolo Martinenghi prevail, upsetting England's Adam Peaty who was denied a three-peat after having earned gold in the previous two editions of the event. Peaty would wind up being credited with silver, sharing that medal with Fink.

Sunday also saw a series of heats and semifinals leading into tomorrow, which will feature the Men's 200m Freestyle and 100m Backstroke finals as well as the Women's 400m Individual Medley, 100m Breaststroke, and 200m Freestyle finals.
