Simone Biles and the women's national team set a high bar during the gymnastics qualifying round at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Biles, Suni Lee, Jade Carey, Jordan Chiles, and newcomer Hezly Rivera earned an excellent 172.296 score. With Russia not competing, it's unlikely any other country will top Team USA.

Biles, despite tweaking her calf during warmups on the floor, dominated the competition. She finished the qualifying round in first place with a 59.566. Lee finished in second place with a 56.132, narrowly edging out Chiles to compete in the all-around competition.

Chiles finished with a 56.065, losing the eligibility to compete in the all-around competition by .067 points. Considering Chiles proved to be one of the best gymnasts competing in Paris, placing fourth overall, fans erupted in anger over the Olympic rule that keeps her from participating in the all-around competition.

A total of 24 gymnasts participate in the all-around competition. Due to the two-person per country rule, however, viewers won't necessarily see all the best competitors, merely the two highest-scorers from each country.

The International Olympics Committee (IOC) first adjusted the rules after the 1972 Olympics, during which four of the six competitors in the vault final were Soviet gymnasts, and five of the six men competing in the vault final were from Japan, according to Gymnasticshistory.com . In an effort to keep one country from dominating each event, the new rule allowed just three gymnasts per country to compete in the all-around, and two per country in the individual events.

However, after Romania swept the all-around competition with three gymnasts during the 2000 Olympics, the international gymnastics federation (FIG), changed the rule to two gymnasts per country in order to make the games more inclusive.

"It’s just stupid," gymnast Aly Raisman said of the two-person per country rule during the 2016 Rio Olympics. At the time, Gabby Douglas missed out on the all-around competition despite placing third behind Raisman and Biles.

"I think the two-per-country rule is the dumbest thing ever. Who cares if there’s five Chinese girls in the finals? If they’re the best, they should compete,” Raisman concluded.

Based on the fan reaction to Chiles missing the cut in 2024, they share Raisman's point of view.
