The rapport of American women's beach volleyball duo Sara Hughes and Kelly Cheng was on full display in their opening match at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

At Eiffel Tower Stadium, the duo coasted to a victory over Czechia's Marie-Sara Stochlova and Barbora Hermanova, 2-0 (21-16, 21-11). However, the final match point didn't come quickly. Both sides traded multiple shots before Cheng sealed the win.

Cheng and Hughes dominated while they played together at Southern Cal. According to NBC's Ethan Sacks, the duo won 103 straight matches and the sport's first two national titles.

They split after turning pro in 2018, but reunited in 2022, which seems like a wise choice thus far. In 2023, they became the first American combination to win the world championships in 14 years.

"We have really good chemistry," Cheng told Olympics.com. "Our styles of play complement each other really well. We're both at the same stages of life and on the same page with a lot of things. And I think that's just helped us fight hard together and fight for each other on and off the court, which I think is really important."

Cheng and Walsh aim to win Team USA's fifth gold medal in women's beach volleyball despite stiff competition. They're ranked No. 3 in the Olympics behind fellow Americans Kristen Nuss and Taryn Kloth and Brazilians Duda Lisboa and Ana Patricia Ramos.
