Olympics Day 3 briefing: Simone Biles, Kevin Durant highlight Team USA's early success

The action and drama continued Sunday at the Paris Games.

Simone Biles and U.S. women's gymnastics lead the competition heading into the all-around and team finals. Despite a taped ankle after a calf injury in warm ups, Biles powered through to finish on top of the individual all-around prelims.

Teammate Jade Carey told a reporter she was dealing with illness but decided to compete anyways. Suni Lee and Jordan Chiles finished second and third respectively behind Biles in all-around but Chiles will miss out on the finals due to the two-per-country limit.

Team USA easily dispatched opponents Japan and Brazil in its women's rugby opening matches with a combined score of 60-12. Ilona Maher scored multiple impressive tries in both victories. The American women play France on Monday to decide their knock-out seeding.

American Haley Batten earned silver in the women's cross-country cycling event Sunday, the best-ever finish by Team USA in the Olympic sport.

And there was an all-American gold medal match in women's fencing individual foil . Team USA's Lee Keifer defeated teammate Lauren Scruggs to successfully defend her gold medal from the Tokyo Games.

1. Men's basketball handles Serbia in Olympic opener

Kevin Durant did not miss a shot in the first half as Team USA pulled away from Serbia 110-84 in its Olympic opening match Sunday. Durant's 23 points led the team as they earned a crucial two standings points. Team USA next faces South Sudan on Wednesday, who nearly won against the Americans in a warm up game on July 21.

2. Swimming delivers top action yet again

Drama in the pool was of no shortage Sunday. France's Leon Marchand gave the home fans something to cheer about early, earning gold in the men's 400 Individual Medley. American Torri Huske edged out teammate Gretchen Walsh for gold in the women's 100 Butterfly while Great Britain's Adam Peaty and U.S. co-captain Nic Fink tied for silver in the men's 100 Breaststroke. Fink's other co-captain Ryan Murphy barely qualified for the men's 100 backstroke final.

3. Women's soccer defeats Germany to qualify for quarterfinals

Team USA put away a strong Germany side 4-1 in its second group stage match Sunday. Sophia Smith scored twice and Mallory Swanson tallied the go-ahead goal in the first half alone. Lynn Williams put the iced the match late in the second half. The Americans will play Australia on Wednesday needing only a draw to win their group.

Tennis legends Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are set to face off in the Olympic tennis second round in what is usually a matchup reserved for a Grand Slam final. With Nadal's professional future in question after the Paris Games, this could be the final time the two greats meet in a competitive setting.

Also, Team Japan women's soccer pulled off an incredible upset Sunday morning, scoring twice late in second half stoppage time to defeat powerhouse Brazil 2-1.
