The actor is known for playing Tony Stark and his alter ego Iron Man in the hit comic book series, but with his character's last appearance in Avengers: Endgame, he appears to be taking on a new role in the series. Robert made the announcement this weekend at San Diego's Comic-Con .

"I don’t get it, are you a baddie now?" she wrote in his comment section. Gwyneth portrayed Pepper Potts, Tony Stark's love interest in the film series.

Doctor Doom, whose real name is Victor von Doom, is one of the villains of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Known mostly for battling the Fantastic Four, it's unclear if the character will be a variant of Tony Stark or if it will be an original character. Robert's face won't be shown, as Doctor Doom wears a silver mask.

At ComicCon this year, many people dressed as Doctor Doom took the stage, donning green robes. One person had a different shade of green on, and when he took off his mask it was revealed to be Robert.

Two Avengers films were announced, Avengers: Doomsday in May 2026 and Avengers: Secret Wars in May 2027, with Robert playing Doom in both. The Russo Brothers are set to direct both.

Fans were divided at the announcement. While some fans were excited to see the Oscar-winning actor return to the film series, others thought Robert wasn't the person for the role.

In the comics, Doctor Doom is of Romani descent, which plays a huge role in his villain origin story. Many thought that a Romani actor should have been cast instead of Robert.

One fan wrote on Twitter, now known as X: "Doctor Doom being a Romani man with a background CENTERING his family's racial persecution. with his ethnicity at the forefront of his motivations and his tragedy. and they really just brought back robert downey junior. wow. WOW."
