Tommy DeVito raises eyebrows with bold message to NFL team with roster spot at risk

Tommy DeVito insisted the New York Giants would be taking a “gamble” by letting the second-year quarterback go ahead of the 2024 NFL season.

DeVito, the undrafted Italian-American who became a cult hero by winning three of his first four starts in his rookie campaign, became a sensation in New York. Now, though, the 25-year-old is playing for his future career with the organization.

DeVito finds himself below Daniel Jones and Drew Lock on the quarterback depth chart amid rumblings over the Giants ’ desire to add a franchise quarterback for the long-term future. This means the local hero must impress in training camp if he is to continue with the NFC East franchise.

“I’m going to put them in a situation to make a decision,” DeVito told reporters after Sunday’s practice. “It’s going to be up to them. I’m going to go out and do my job to the highest ability. It’s not in my hands - this decision.”

He added: “I’m very aware of how they operate in this organization. That’s up to them to make that decision, make that gamble. I’m going to continue to play. We’ll see how everything unfolds.”

Giants general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll have not carried three quarterbacks on the active roster during their first two seasons. But after losing Tyrod Taylor to the New York Jets in free agency, the Giants signed Lock to a one-year deal worth up to $5 million to be Jones’ backup.

This leaves DeVito in a concerning position ahead of the 90-player roster being cut down to 53. He would be available for a franchise to claim on waivers, while he may also join a practice squad.

As a starter last season, DeVito went 3-3 and completed 64 percent of his passes for 1,101 yards with eight touchdowns and three interceptions. His performances kept a healthy Taylor on the bench for a few weeks, and he is looking to showcase how much more “comfortable” he is in the NFL now.

When asked what he showed in the NFL last season, DeVito said: “That I can play, that I belong. I can play in a lot of different situations. Obviously circumstances were not the best, right? There were a lot of guys dinged up. There were a lot of missing pieces.

“With that being said, we are able to get some momentum, get a couple wins. I proved I belong – mentally, physically – and I’m going to continue to grow off that.”
