Matt Richards was narrowly denied a gold medal by David Popovici in a thrilling freestyle final at the Olympics after a thrilling day at Paris 2024 .

A magic Monday for Team GB saw them claim their first gold of Paris 2024 in the team eventing competition at lunchtime on day three. And there was a second gold medal to come in thrilling fashion in the men’s mountain bike, with Tom Pidcock overcoming a puncture to defend his Olympic title.

There were high hopes that Richards could join them in the 200m freestyle and the youngster, appearing in his first individual Olympic final, looked perfectly placed with five metres to go. But the fast-finishing Popovici somehow got the touch, leaving the Brit to second for silver with teammate Duncan Scott cruelly confined to fourth.

Earlier, flagbearer Tom Daley and Noah Williams had also secured silver in the men’s synchronised 10m diving final on Monday morning, edged out by a masterclass from the pair from China. Elsewhere on Day Three of the Games, one of the biggest clashes of the Olympics took place in the tennis, where Novak Djokovic defeated his great rival Rafael Nadal 6-1 6-4 in a sensational second-round clash in the men’s singles.
