TOM DALEY’S Olympic diving team-mate Noah Williams broke down in tears after winning silver in Paris.

The pair produced a superb set of dives to finish second in the men’s synchronised 10m platform final on Monday morning.

However, their titanic score of 463.44 was not enough to beat faultless China duo Junjie Lian and Hao Yang’s score of 490.35.

Speaking after the event, Williams recalled how he considered quitting the sport after the shock death of his coach Dave Jenkins in October 2021.

Jenkins died of sudden adult death syndrome aged 31 while swimming in a pool in the Turkish resort of Antlaya.

He was the development lead coach for Dive London, based at the London Aquatics Centre, where he had worked for eight years.

Jenkins was a mentor and a friend to Williams since the Olympics star was just 16.

Appearing on the BBC, 24-year-old Williams said: “It (the medal) means a lot to me. From third last to second, my coach passed away after Tokyo.

“I don’t want to talk to too much cause I’ll cry.”

Williams was then overcome with emotion and needed to be consoled by Daley, with the Team GB flagbearer embracing him in a hug.

He added he was “happy” with the achievement.

Williams was then asked about the tattoo on his arm in honour of his late coach and how proud he would be seeing him win an Olympic silver medal.

Barely able to get his words out, he said: “He’d be pretty proud.”

He then looked towards Daley and asked “do you want to talk for me?”

Taking over interviewing duties, Daley said: “I’ve never seen Noah cry in my whole life.

“I know how much this has meant to him and Dave has been such a key part in Noah’s diving success and career and it’s very sad he’s not here to be able to see this.

“But I know both Dave and my dad would be very proud to see us going in and doing a really really solid performance for a silver medal.”

Daley’s silver means he has now won five Olympic medals in his diving career.

He won gold in the same event in Tokyo 2020, while also adding a bronze in the individual event.

Daley also won bronze in the synchro event at Rio 2016 and in the single at London 2012.

The 30-year-old revealed his son’s heartfelt plea to convince him to carry on.

He was cheered on by sons Robbie and Phoenix as well as American movie producer husband Dustin Lance Black.

Daley revealed it was his eldest, six-year-old Robbie, who pleaded with him to carry on diving after winning gold and bronze in Tokyo in 2021.

He told BBC Sport: “It’s just so special, this time last year, deciding to come back not knowing if I would make the synchronised team, let alone make the sport for the Olympics.

“Then to be here, diving in Paris , in front of my son, who is just right there, who asked me to come back, it’s just so special, and it completes the set – I now have one of every colour.”

Daley and Black – who got married in 2017 – keep their two boys largely out of the public.

But both wore tops with dad Daley on them as Black joined mother-in-law Debbie in the Paris stands.
