Platypus Craft ’s underwater dreams are finally becoming reality.

The company’s 28-foot semi-submersible catamaran, which was first floated as a concept over a decade ago, could be cruising the seas by early 2025, according to the French company.

Platypus has tapped Norwegian start-up Evoy to produce the electric propulsion systems for the inaugural production models. “We are excited to join forces with Evoy, a company that shares our values and vision for a sustainable future,” Platypus Craft founder and CEO François-Alexandre Bertrand said in a statement . This partnership will allow us to push the boundaries of what is possible in marine exploration.”

The Platypus line consists of multiple vessels that can cruise above or below the water, including the entry-level Sanctuary model, the elegant Yacht Edition, and a robust Tourer variant. Each design features a sleek catamaran-style hull and a “basket” that can be lowered into the water. The basket is outfitted with six seats and easy-to-use breathing devices, meaning seafarers can explore the underwater world without needing diving certifications.

The Yacht Edition craft will be equipped with twin Evoy Breeze outboards that can produce 120 horses. The electric motors are not only emissions-free, but also eliminate fuel slicks, bilge water, and noise to prevent any disruption to the surrounding marine environment. The cat can sail across the waves at a cruising speed of 15 knots or a top speed of 25 knots and travel underwater at a more leisurely pace of between three and five knots. It is also fitted with two 63 kW batteries that afford between 30 and 80 nautical miles of range, as well as a dedicated diving battery pack that provides between six and 12 hours of underwater autonomy.

“By combining Evoy’s powerful electric motor systems and Platypus Craft’s innovative concept, it’s possible to explore nature without impacting it,” explained Evoy cofounder and CEO Leif Stavøstrand. “Together, we will create unforgettable and environmentally friendly experiences.”

Platypus launched a prototype in the Mediterranean in 2021 and has demonstrated the vessel can be used for either eco-tourism or marine research. The 23-foot trimaran has clocked 700 hours on the water in Noumea, Corsica, and the south of France. It has also been used as part of the environmental expeditions led by the Blue Odyssey Initiative during which it has observed and mapped the seabed. Just imagine what a whole fleet could do.
