Walmart admits shopper ‘deserved better’ after she was forced to abandon cart while waiting in checkout line

WALMART has been criticized for failing to provide customer support for a disabled customer after workers allegedly laughed at her.

The shopper shared their story on social media following their upsetting ordeal.

They described the incident as "my worst ever experience" in a Walmart store.

The woman explained that she was disabled and was looking for a motorized cart to help her around the store.

"The employees were too busy talking amongst themselves to help me," she wrote on Facebook.

"I had to go to the self-checkout because the only open lanes with checkers were a mile long.

"I had a question about one of my items. I waited over 5 minutes for the 5 employees that were at the end of self-checkout to notice me waving for help," the woman said.

According to her, the employees were distracted and on their phones.

"When I realized they weren't going to be helpful, I asked to see the manager.

"They all went back to their visiting spot and they talked bad about me and had a good laugh," she continued.

"Two other employees passed through, but they didn't help me either.

"I never did see the manager, even though I waited about 20 minutes," she added.

In her frustration, the shopper called one employee a "clown" and proceeded to abandon her cart.

"Out of the blue an old lady named 'Cora' flew in front of me. She didn't know what was going on... she got really, really loud as she threw me out of the store," she customer wrote.

"They certainly treat people with a great deal of respect."

Walmart responded to this post on Facebook, admitting "you deserve a better experience when shopping with us."

The U.S. Sun has approached Walmart for a comment on this incident.

This does not seem to be the first time something like this has happened.

Another Walmart spoke about a similar experience on the same post.

"This happens at my local Walmart too, I even called about my husband waiting an hour for a scooter to no avail.

"No one ever called me back," they said.

    Latest self-checkout changes

Retailers are evolving their self-checkout strategy in an effort to speed up checkout times and reduce theft.

Walmart shoppers were shocked when self-checkout lanes at various locations were made available only for Walmart+ members.

Other customers reported that self-checkout was closed during specific hours, and more cashiers were offered instead.

While shoppers feared that shoplifting fueled the updates, a Walmart spokesperson revealed that store managers are simply experimenting with ways to improve checkout performance.

One bizarre experiment included an RFID-powered self-checkout kiosk that would stop the fiercely contested receipt checks.

However, that test run has been phased out.

At Target, items are being limited at self-checkout.

Last fall, the brand surveyed new express self-checkout lanes across 200 stores with 10 items or less for more convenience.

As of March 2024, this policy has been expanded across 2,000 stores in the US.

Shoppers have also spotted their local Walmart stores restricting customers to 15 items or less to use self-checkout machines.

Walmart has also come under fire in recent months for strict self-checkout rules and continuous receipt checks.

The retailer recently introduced a 15 item or less policy, meaning shoppers with anything more are not allowed to use self-checkout desks.

This policy, however, has frustrated many customers who are not willing to wait in long lines to pay at a cashier.

"I literally had 17 items... and they only had 1 line with a cashier open," one Walmart customer said on social media.

Others have grown tired of having their receipts checked when leaving the store.

These measures were initially introduced to cut down on shoplifting, but shoppers are often left unimpressed.

"I walk past them. I always call over my shoulder... call the cops," said one shopper who argued that they do not have to comply with these checks.
