Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford discussed many of the upcoming developments for the Borderlands franchise in a recent interview.

With Borderlands 3 , which came out in 2019, and the spinoff Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, which came out in 2022, fans are starving for another Borderlands game . In a recent interview with Games Radar , Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford teased that the studio has been “working on big things.” He also mentioned that an announcement will be coming soon, meaning fans should get some new information on the post-apocalyptic RPG world.

Publisher 2K confirmed earlier this year that the next Borderlands game is in active development at Gearbox after it announced that it had acquired Gearbox Entertainment from Embracer Group for $460 million. While the Borderlands film is weeks away from release , Pitchford teased that an announcement about the next Borderlands movie could come “before the end of the year. We’ll see. Maybe sooner.”

“I haven’t been perfect at hiding the fact that we’re working on many things and that we’re working on big things,” the co-founder said. “I’m confident that our fans are going to be very, very happy with the next video game project when we are ready to announce it. And I will tell you that we’re not going to be making people wait for a long time before we announce it.” With the film coming out soon, the studio should make that announcement sometime around the release of the film. Perhaps the film’s post-credits scene will tease more to come?

Pitchford enthusiastically added: “I have the biggest and best team that I’ve ever had working on what we know is exactly what our fans want from us—so I’m very, very thrilled. I can’t wait to talk about it! I wish I could just gush right now because we’ve got so much to say!” Pitchford should not have much to worry about, as the Borderlands games have never ceased to sell millions of copies.

2019’s Borderlands 3 was 2K’s fastest-selling title and has sold over 19 million copies. 2012’s Borderlands 2 is 2K’s top-selling game since the label’s inception seven years earlier, with over 28 million copies sold. Then, T iny Tina’s Wonderlands spinoff and new game style for the franchise also saw much success. Pitchford also hinted that fans could see more from the D&D -inspired sub-series in the future.

“We had a bigger result with the first Wonderlands game than we did with the first Borderlands game, so that’s something we can build on,” he said. “I love fantasy. That’s why we did the original Dragon Keep DLC for Borderlands 2 because I love fantasy so much. So many of us at Gearbox love fantasy, and it gives us that kind of place to mess around with that in the context of the Borderlands themes and universe. I think it’s reasonable for our fans to expect more there.”
