Anthony Gordon transfer latest as Liverpool talks 'revived' amid clear Newcastle stance

With Fulham having re-signed Ryan Sessegnon on a free transfer, Liverpool is now the only club in the Premier League that is yet to complete a signing this summer. That is not to say the Reds have not been trying to recruit , of course.

New head coach Arne Slot is still getting to know the players he has inherited and are already in the Liverpool squad. It’s feasible that there are men on the roster who will get more of an opportunity than they received under Jürgen Klopp .

But this obviously doesn’t preclude sporting director Richard Hughes from recruiting fresh blood. He spoke in Slot’s first press conference about the club’s ‘opportunistic’ approach in the transfer market. Liverpool’s unsuccessful bid for Anthony Gordon was a perfect example of such a move, with Newcastle needing to raise funds. Now, the saga may have been reignited.

Sources have reportedly advised Caught Offside that a new round of negotiations have begun between the Reds and Newcastle . To recap what has gone before, it was claimed that Jarell Quansah was to be included as part of the deal. Liverpool was wisely not willing to lose its most promising young center-back to fill a position for which it already has ample cover.

Caught Offside has also noted that the Magpies remain opposed to a sale. However, the club appears willing to listen to what Liverpool has to say, so perhaps the deal remains a possibility.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe set his stall out on the matter last week. “Anthony Gordon is a crucial player for us, we didn’t want to lose anybody,” he said (via Fabrizio Romano ). "Why would we want to lose our best players? We fought really hard to make the right decisions. In those last few weeks it was very, very difficult. But it will be ok with Gordon".

The club are reportedly looking to extend the England international’s contract, which has two years left to run. Newcastle are aiming to agree a deal which runs until 2029, with Chelsea and Manchester United supposedly competing with Liverpool to obtain the player.

Gordon hit double figures for both goals and assists in the Premier League last season, the first Newcastle player to hit both marks since Ruel Fox in 1994/95. It is understandable that the Magpies wish to retain the 23-year-old. With the player reportedly having had his head turned by his hometown club’s interest , the deal is not dead in the water yet.

Liverpool.com says: This transfer was never going to be easy to complete. Newcastle may have been under pressure from Profit and Sustainability rules but it will not allow arguably its most prized asset to leave without a fight. If the negotiations have restarted as is claimed, Gordon's club is clearly still willing to listen to offers though.
