Fans left stunned by Novak Djokovic’s sportsmanlike gesture against fierce rival Rafael Nadal in Olympic tennis

FANS were left stunned after Novak Djokovic’s sportsmanlike gesture against his fierce rival Rafael Nadal at Paris 2024.

The Serbian ace beat the Spaniard 2-0 at Roland Garros in the second round of the men’s singles.

When down 3-0 in the first set Nadal looked to have put a backhand long to go 4-0 down.

But before the umpire had a look at the ball mark the Serbian star corrected the referee and called that the shot was in.

And fans were impressed with Djokovic’s sportsmanship.

One said : “Concedes break point in game 4 before umpire even had a look at the ball mark, ball was likely out too!! …!! Class.”

Another added : “Good sportsmanship from Djokovic there on the line call.”

While a third put : “What SPORTSMANSHIP. Take a bow Mr Djokovic.”

This match marked a record breaking 60th time that Nadal and Djokovic have faced each other, with Djokovic leading 30-29 before today’s clash.

Despite the blip by the referee Djokovic held off a spectacular second-set fightback to continue his quest for gold in what could be the final meeting of the pair.

This saw Nadal, the 14-time French Open winner fall to a rare defeat on the Phillippe-Chartrier court.

Three-time French Open champion Djokovic will now head into the third round where he will play Dominik Koepfer of Germany or Italy’s Matteo Arnald.

The serbian tennis great and Nadal have a combined 46 Grand Slam titles between them from a rivalry that stretches back 18 years.

It’s Novak Djokovic vs Rafael Nadal in a blockbuster second-round singles clash at Roland Garros, the tennis superstars’ 60th and probably final meeting (12.30pm).

Ukraine’s six-time fencing world champion Olha Kharlan was sent a personal letter by IOC chief Thomas Bach guaranteeing her place at a fifth Olympics.

She was disqualified from the fencing world champs last year for refusing to shake hands with her Russian opponent. The women’s sabre final is at 8.45pm.
