A TikToker suggested washing trash cans as a simple side hustle to earn $8,400 a month TikTok/financeunfolded Some viewers argued that they wouldn’t pay $15 for someone to wash their trash can Getty
Mark (@ financeunfolded ) shared a special series on side hustles that are easy for teens to do during summer break.
In one video, he explained how to make up to $8,400 monthly by washing trash cans.
“I always saved this side hustle to do with my friends during summer and we would make bank,” he captioned the video.
All you need is a hose, but Mark also used a cleaning solution to go the extra step.
You can go door to door in your neighborhood and offer to clean up grimy trash cans for just $15.
He says it takes about 20 minutes per trash can, and he cleans about 20 cans daily.
At that rate, he earns $2,100 a week, or $8,400 a month.
Some commenters were quick to point out a key issue with Mark’s plan.
“$15 per can?? I’ll give them kids $5, maybe!” wrote one viewer.
Another viewer said they regularly clean out trash cans with a pressure washer doesn’t recommend charging $15.
“The amount of people who will say yes to the $5 will heavily outweigh those who say yes to $15. [The] $5 will make you more money in the long-run,” they wrote.

A recent study found that more than a third of US adults have taken on side hustles to supplement their income.
People have gotten creative about how to earn more cash, and many have taken to TikTok to share their side hustle tips.
Another TikToker (@ upcharge101 ) shared another side hustle that is perfect for the summer months.
He started painting and repairing mailboxes in his neighborhood, charging $150 on average.
Side hustles and tax implications
The extra income made from side hustles may need to be reported to the IRS.
If you receive more than $600 in gross payouts from a selling platform like eBay, the site will issue you a Form 1099-K to use in your tax return.
Individuals should calculate their adjusted gross income, taxable earnings, and deductions for the year.
Once they have that, they can use the 1040-ES form to calculate estimated taxes.
It only costs about $60 to get started. You’ll need to buy white paint, black spray paint, paintbrushes, a screwdriver, and some mulch.
He said the mulch isn’t necessary, but offering to add it to the base of the mailbox and pull out any weeds could earn you more money.
The first thing he does is take off any address numbers that are on the mailbox and repaint them.
While they dry, he paints the mailbox and pulls any weeds from the area
Then he reattaches the numbers, lays down some mulch, and collects his cash.
“Starting off, you might be a little slow, but once you get the hang of it, 45 minutes to an hour, and bam, you’re knocking jobs out!” he said.
Before summer ends, you can try another side hustle that involves yard work and pays $35 an hour .
