Full House star Candace Cameron Bure condemned a controversial moment from the Olympics opening ceremony for its alleged drag “interpretation” of Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper .

On social media, Bure noted that the Olympics hold a special place for her family, as her husband Valeri Bure is a two-time Olympic winner.

“The Olympic Games have always brought me so much joy. It’s the best of the best athletes in the world competing for the title,” she said in a video shared on social media. “So to watch such an incredible and wonderful event that’s gonna take place over the next two weeks and see the opening ceremonies completely blaspheme and mock the Christian faith with their interpretation of the Last Supper was disgusting.”

She continued, “And it made me so sad. And someone said, ‘You shouldn’t be sad. You should be mad about it.’ And I’m like, ‘Trust me. It makes me mad.’ But I’m more sad, because I’m sad for souls.”

The moment in question featured a tableau of drag queens in costume, in a formation that some viewers felt was inspired by The Last Supper , which famously depicts Jesus’ last meal with his 12 apostles.

Bure concluded her video on social media with a message to her followers.

“This is my encouragement to you,” she said. “Don’t get tired of doing good. Keep sharing the gospel. And it’s not just for the people that like openly mock God.”

In the caption, she added, “Since posting, many have tried to correct me saying it wasn’t about an interpretation of DaVinci’s The Last Supper , but a Greek god and the festival of Dionysus; who is a god of lust, insanity, religious ecstasy, ritual madness etc. I still don’t see how that relates to unifying the world through competitive sports and acceptable for children to watch. In any case, I’m not buying it.”

Thomas Jolly, who served as the ceremony’s artist director, has since denied that the performance was inspired by The Last Supper amid public outcry.

“It’s not my inspiration and that should be pretty obvious,” he explained during an appearance on BFMTV, per Deadline . “There’s Dionysus arriving on a table. Why is he there? First and foremost because he is the god of celebration in Greek mythology and the tableau is called Festivity .”

He continued, “He is also the god of wine, which is also one of the jewels of France, and the father of Séquana, the goddess of the river Seine. The idea was to depict a big pagan celebration, linked to the gods of Olympus, and thus the Olympics.” Viewers have since speculated that the performance may have been inspired by painter Jan van Bijlert’s piece, The Feast of the Gods.

Bure’s social media post garnered over 261,000 likes on Instagram, with fans of dissenting opinions flooding her comments.

Some commenters voiced their support for her message, with one user writing, “It was demonic and Satanic and meant to mock God on a global stage. It was not art,” in a comment that Bure liked.

In another comment, someone pointed out that the opening ceremony was meant to share the history of the Olympics and France.

“The story was about the Greek Gods and the history of the Olympics. I think Americans are over reacting because of our own turmoil in this country…If France was predominantly a country of another religion, and was outspoken about hating Christian people or beliefs I could see what you are saying. But there is no logic to this theory,” they wrote.

The opening ceremony was mired by several controversial moments and mistakes. Lady Gaga experienced technical difficulties during her performance, during which a dancer reportedly fell off stage. The organizers also misidentified South Korea’s athletes as North Korea.
