For decades, Flavor Flav has been an icon in the hip hop world. But now, he can add “Biggest Hype Man” for the U.S. women’s water polo team to his long list of accomplishments. But how and why did this unexpected partnership come about? Turns out, the rapper is a huge fan of the sport . As a result, he came across a post made by Olympic swimmer Maggie Steffens. In it, she shares that most Olympians, her teammates included, work second or third jobs to make ends meet.

This inspired Flavor Flav to show his support for these hardworking athletes. In fact, he left a comment letting Maggie know that his manager would be in touch with her agent so they could arrange something — and boy did they! He’s officially signed on to support them financially and by showing up for certain interviews and events, like the one below. “Everybody wants to feel like … somebody has their back,” he explains . “And when they feel that, it makes them feel more powerful, it makes them feel more better. It gives them a lot more energy to go out and get that fourth gold medal.”

There’s no doubt that Flavor Flav already understood that what they do is impressive, but he understands it even more after their time together in the pool. Like Flavor Flav said, the U.S. women’s water polo team has their sights set on that 4th gold medal. So far, they’re off to a great start! In their first match of the games, the talented team won against Greece, 15-6.

“For me doing this, I ain’t gonna lie, to me this is one of the biggest things that I feel that I could have ever done in life, outside of the other accomplishments that I’ve made to music,” Flavor Flav explains . “By sponsoring a water polo team and helping these girls out, this is bigger than me winning a Grammy.”
