When thinking of the quintessential American band, one would likely turn to the Eagles. Their musicality is tailor made for underscoring a road trip out West. Nevertheless, Glenn Frey thought another band had them beat in that department. Find out which band Frey heralded as “The Great American Supergroup,” below.

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young consisted of two Americans, a Brit, and a Canadian. On paper, their candidacy for being “The Great American Supergroup” is called into question. Frey, however, thought their music superseded nationality. Their unique sense of harmony and songwriting ability put them on a pedestal in the Eagles member’s mind.

“I bought that first album and freaked out right along with everyone else,” Frey once said. “Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young are, in essence, The Great American Supergroup.”

It’s hard to argue the contrary. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young guided a generation of disgruntled Americans with their thought-provoking protest songs. They also soothed their grievances with their more gentle numbers. All in all, the band was deeply influential in their heyday and they continue to be so today.

Frey’s compliment becomes even more touching when you consider the Eagles’ track record. They too have had a once-in-a-generation run. Songs like “Life in the Fast Lane,” “New Kid in Town,” and “Hotel California” are indispensable in the world of American rock. However, no one creates without some sort of goal in mind. For Frey, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young were that unreachable goal.
