Former BBC anchor Huw Edwards has been charged with creating indecent images of children . The 62 year old veteran newsreader is facing three charges related to alleged activities between December 2020 and April 2022, and is set to appear in court on Wednesday.

Edwards, who famously broke the news of Queen Elizabeth II's death to millions of viewers, left the BBC in April after a 40-year tenure.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police stated: "Huw Edwards, 62, of Southwark, London, has been charged with three counts of making indecent images of children following a Met Police investigation."

They added that the offences, which allegedly took place between December 2020 and April 2022, are connected to images shared in a WhatsApp chat.

Edwards was arrested on November 8, 2023, and charged on Wednesday, June 26, after receiving authorization from the Crown Prosecution Service. On April 22, the BBC announced that Huw Edwards had stepped down from his role due to medical advice,

The broadcaster issued a brief statement saying: "Huw Edwards has today resigned and left the BBC," adding that "After 40 years of service, Huw has explained that his decision was made on the basis of medical advice from his doctors."

The BBC accepted his resignation, stating it would allow all parties to move forward and declined to comment further.

The offences Edwards is charged with can result in a prison sentence of up to 10 years. Edwards was previously the BBC's most high-profile and best-paid news anchor.

He was a key presenter on BBC One's Ten O'Clock News and was frequently selected to lead coverage of significant national events, such as the passing of the late Queen.
