Releasing Fathers & Sons back in June, the album marked the fifth record released by Luke Combs. Only spending a decade in country music, the singer wasted little time making a name for himself. Throughout his time in the spotlight, Combs gained stardom thanks to songs like “When It Rains It Pours” and “Beautiful Crazy.” But outside his own projects, the country star also collaborated with icons like Tracy Chapman. Showcasing his wide range when it comes to music, Combs once channeled Vince Gill when he covered “Go Rest High On That Mountain.”

Causally standing in the studio, Combs decided to give the iconic song a try. While not needing to try given his talents, Combs gracefully made his way through a few lyrics, proving his voice can expand far beyond a single genre. Gaining thousands of views, fans gushed over the cover, writing, “OMG!!! SOOO GOOD! You’re such an amazing singer! Ya! Bless you and your family!”

Jumping back to 1995 when the song was released, Gill worked on the lyrics for years. He started writing back in 1989 when Keith Whitley passed away. Although using those emotions when writing, Gill eventually finished the song after his older brother, Bill, passed away from a heart attack. Gaining some help on the background vocals from Ricky Skaggs and Patty Loveless, “Go Rest High On That Mountain” won the Song of The Year at the CMAs in 1996.

Luke Combs Notes The Downside Of Fame

While enjoying his career in country music and rubbing shoulders with some of the biggest names in the genre, Combs shared the downside of fame when he missed the birth of his son. Appearing on The Zane Lowe Show, the singer revealed missing his son’s birth was “One of the best and one of the worst days in my life at the same time.”

Back in August 2023, Combs found himself in Australia due to his Luke Combs World Tour. And to his surprise, his wife, Nicole, told him she went into labor early. Although not able to be there psychically, Combs was thankful for technology. “I got to see him be born, which was awesome.”
