Simone Biles will have her husband, Jonathan Owens, cheering her on as she goes for gold at the Paris Olympics. However, some of his past controversial remarks about their relationship have resurfaced and clouded her big moment.

Owens, a safety with the Chicago Bears, was excused from his team's training camp so he could travel to Paris and support Biles. He has shared excitement about getting to watch the 27-year-old as she aims to make history, but back in December, he sparked controversy when describing the start of their relationship.

The Associated Press published a story focusing on the comments, which Owens made in an appearance on The Pivot podcast . Owens described how he didn't know who Biles was when they connected through a dating app in 2020. The NFL player drew further scrutiny when he said he believed he was "the catch" in the relationship.

The comments drew some pushback at the time, with some believing the remarks downplayed the gold medal-winning gymnast.

Biles has already spoken out about the comments, saying she was there with Owens when he made the statement and had no problem with it.

“I was literally in the room watching,” Biles said. “I was laughing and I’m like, ‘He’s so cute’ because at the end of the day, there’s nothing wrong with him saying that he’s a catch because he is, like, the best guy I’ve ever met.”

More recent comments from Owens have been filled with praise.

"I just think about, 'How did I get so lucky that this is my wife and I get to see her, someone that's literally at the pinnacle of their sport, and I get to call this my wife?' It's amazing," Owens said . "There's no words to really describe it. Just blessed."
