Team USA Makes Major Simone Biles Announcement For 2024 Paris Olympics

Fans would have thought that iconic gymnast Simone Biles would appreciate some sort of break to help rest her re-injured calf, but on Monday we learned that won't be the case.
The seven-time Olympic medalist who has four golds to her name thanks to a stellar showing in Rio in 2016, is reportedly set to compete in all four of the women's gymnastics team finals events. The news comes after Biles appeared to aggravate what was later revealed to be a calf injury that she suffered a couple of weeks ago, and could be seen wearing tape on her leg after the incident in which she was limping and even crawling off the mat.

As revealed by USA TODAY's Nancy Amour, Biles will anchor Team USA in vault, balance beam, and floor exercise, and be the second-to-last person on the uneven bars. This may seem like a lot to ask of someone who is dealing with an injury and suffered from a case of the "twisties" during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Many people liken it to the yips that we see in baseball or golf, which is essentially when an elite athlete has a mental block and is unable to perform a task that they'd otherwise normally be able to do.
However, Biles and her coaches are approaching the 2024 games with a much different mindset, one that according to Amour takes a lot of pressure off the 27-year-old.
After being told she was a team's "gold-medal token, " which helped contribute to her anxiety and case of the twisties, Chellsie Memmel, the technical lead for the U.S. women’s team, has emphasized to Biles they are a team.
“I don’t say that to her or, 'You are keeping us all together and we rely on you and you alone,’” Memmel said per Amour. “If not doing all four is what she needs to continue to be at her best for the team and for herself, that’s what we’re going to do, because there are still four other members on our team.”
Biles shined in all four events, earning a 14.600 on the floor, which is actually where she had tweaked her calf during practice. After that, she went on over to the vault where she pulled off the historic Yurchenko double pike, which has been renamed to the Biles II due to how difficult it is and due to the fact she was the first woman to perform it. A showing that led to her husband and Chicago Bears safety Jonathan Owens, calling it "flawless" on social media. The judges seemed to agree, as she ended up registering a 15.8 on that attempt, along with a 9.4 for execution. After her second vault, she ended up with a team-high 15.300.
On the balance beam, Biles again posted a team-high 14.733, and while she won't be the anchor for the uneven bars she still had the second-best score with a 14.433.
As a team, the U.S. squad finished with 172.296 points, putting them well ahead of the competition with Italy being the next best team, yet still trailing by over five points. Biles and the team will return to action on Tuesday as the women's team final begins at 12:15 p.m. ET.
Biles is just one medal away from supplanting Shannon Miller as the most decorated American Olympic gymnast ever.
