Biles and her siblings stayed in foster care until she was five years old—her biological mother struggled with alcoholism for years and she never met her biological father . Eventually, the children went to live with their biological grandparents, Ron and Nellie. In 2003, Biles and her sister were legally adopted. “I was very, very blessed and fortunate,” Simone told USA Today , reflecting on that moment. “I felt love, care. I was healthy. I was safe.”

“There’s nothing, nothing worse, I feel, than having a child going from one place to the next.
