    Neil Young Announces Massive ‘Archives Volume 3’ Box Set, Spanning 1977 to 1986

    Neil Young is offering fans another expansive journey into his past with the third volume of his Neil Young Archives box sets. The latest installment of his anthology series, which features recordings spanning the years 1976 to 1987, will be released on September 6.

    Neil Young Archives Volume 3 (1976-1987) will be available as a deluxe audio/video collection featuring 17 CDs and five Blu-ray discs, and standard package that doesn’t include the Blu-rays. The deluxe edition features 199 tracks and 11 films, and comes with a 176-page book offering archival photos, press articles, memorabilia, and more. It also boasts a file-cabinet poster and a foldout timeline of Young’s work during the period covered in the set.

    The standard Neil Young Archives Volume 3 includes a 36-page book and the foldout timeline poster.

    Young’s Archives Volume 3 collection features 15 previously unreleased songs, 109 unreleased versions of tunes, and three unreleased full-length albums—Oceanside/Countryside, Road of Plenty, and Johnny’s Island. In advance of the box set, the previously unreleased tune “Bright Sunny Day” has been made is available as a digital track. Young recorded the song in 1978 with his frequent backing band Crazy Horse.

    Among the movies featured on the Blu-rays are three newly assembled concert films—Across the Water (1976), Boarding House (1978), and Catalyst (1984). Across the Water and Catalyst feature Young performing with Crazy Horse, while Boarding House captures Neil playing solo. Other movies on the disc include fan favorites like Rust Never Sleeps, Muddy Track, and Human Highway. There’s also the new animated film Trans, created by current Crazy Horse touring member Micah Nelson.

    More About the Tracks Featured on Archives Volume 3

    The Archives Volume 3 box set also features previously released songs from eight of Young’s studio albums, the 1979 concert album Live Rust, and various archival studio and live records.

    The studio albums represented on the anthology are American Stars ’n Bars (1977), Comes a Time (1978), Rust Never Sleeps (1979), Hawks & Doves (1980), Reactor (1981), Trans (1982), Everybody’s Rockin’ (1983), and Landing on Water (1986).

    The box set also will include tracks from the archival studio albums Hitchhiker, Chrome Dreams, and High Flyin’. Young recorded the latter record with his short-lived group The Ducks. In addition, tracks from the archival live records A Treasure and Songs for Judy are featured on the compilation.

    Among the other songs appearing on Archives Volume 3 are two performances from The Band’s historic 1976 farewell concert “The Last Waltz” and songs from a 1977show Young played with Nicolette Larson.

    Other Details About Archives Volume 3

    Fans purchasing the Archives Volume 3 collection also will receive a free exclusive limited-edition 16-track CD sampler titled Takes and a Neil Young Archives pin, while supplies last. Takes includes one track from 16 of the 17 CDs featured in the box set.

    The deluxe edition of Archives Volume 3 is available exclusively at Young’s Greedy Hands online store. The 17-CD version also will be sold via all retailers.

    A two-LP vinyl version of Takes also will be released on September 6.
