Jeopardy! 's current season 40 has come to an end.

The season finale aired last week Friday, July 26. The game was between two-day returning champion Davey Morrison and contestants Rachel Bradley, an ESL instructor from Greenbelt, Maryland, and Steve Babish, a marketing content strategist from San Jose, California. The actor & screenwriter from Provo, Utah lost his title and Rachel was named the new champion. The ESL instructor will be back to fight to keep her newly placed crown in Season 41.

Season 41 will start again on September 9, 2024, and the season will conclude on July 25, 2025. Now that the season is over, fans are once again sharing their frustration with the long tournaments and the delayed start for being the reason the season seemed short.

Fans made those complaints in different Jeopardy! subreddit threads pertaining to the finale episode and questions about when the new season started after tournament reruns. One fan wrote: "With the delayed season start, I don't understand why they felt a need to quit now. I'm pretty tired of all the tournament games that ran for months, and now they're on repeat." A second fan responded to their comment stating: "The tournaments were still considered to be part of season 40. The season start was not delayed. They have contracts to make a certain number of episodes. They fulfilled that."

Another fan said, complimenting the season despite the tournament play: "it’s been a good season although a majority of it was tournament play… however we did get to see some great players through it such as victoria, juveria, jilana, deb etc. looking forward to next season. rachel will be returning to defend on my birthday. :)" A fourth fan responding to someone saying the season felt short wrote: "It was a short season for regular play, just four months."

Season 40 of Jeopardy! had a different start than usual on September 11, 2023 when the Writer Guild of America Strike happened from May 2, 2023 to September 27, 2023. The show had began with a Second Chance tournament and had former contestants are there to reuse questions from previous Jeopardy! seasons. They also reused clues from previous seasons, at the time a spokesperson from Jeopardy! said it was too "honor our WGA agreements and and we would never air game material not created by WGA writers."

This season was also the first season Ken Jennings hosted alone since he was first announced as a joint co-host with actress Mayim Bialik. The two quickly replaced former game show producer Mike Richards who was ousted after controversy surrounding offensive and disparaging resurfaced comments in September 2021. Mayim was let go from hosting duties in December 2023 as the show decided to have one permanent host instead due to "consistency," according to Executive Producer Michael Davies at the "Unscripted Storytellers" panel at the 2024 Television Critics Association's winter press tour.
