A little boy with cystic fibrosis had one dream—to be a garbage truck driver. So the Make-A-Wish foundation stepped in and made that dream come true.

Four-year-old Alan has loved garbage trucks for as long as his family can remember. He is on the weekly lookout for trucks, and he even dressed as a garbage man for Halloween. But on July 10, Alan went one step further when Make-A-Wish and his local waste management crew made him an honorary crew member.

Alan got to experience the daily real-life routine of a garbage man, which started at the break of dawn. One of the Waste Management drivers told WHDH , “He said he was a little tired when he first started. I’m like, well, trash men start very early in the morning, so you’re going to be tired.”

That small reality check was not enough to curb Alan’s enthusiasm, though. After getting used to his early hours, he got to clock in with a special timecard and learn what it takes to be a garbage man. Alan got to experience all the best parts of being a garbage truck man, like working the trash compactor.

His day ended with a special send-off as he got to ride alongside another driver. Mix that with the crowd of community members that gathered to thank Alan for his hard work, and I’d say it was a pretty incredible day.

The amazing experience was all thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and Alan wasn’t the only person who got to enjoy the day. His younger brother, Theo, who also has cystic fibrosis, rode alone, too. His mom comments on how this day, and seeing the support they got from the community will always stick with her.

Cystic fibrosis affects 40,000 children and adults across the U.S. and can target key organs in the body. However, Alan’s mom mentions how it was nice for one day to think about nothing except celebrating her beautiful boy. We are so happy Alan got to live out his dream.
